SICK SPEED Change Name To CAFU
November 9, 2003Atlanta's SICK SPEED, the band featuring ex-STUCK MOJO members Rich Ward (guitar/vocals) and Bud Fontsere (drums),have officially changed their name to CAFU.
Says Ward: "The band was SICK SPEED for four years, and we had numerous lineup changes, and we went through some transitions, and we felt that to honor what the band is today, it would be best to change the name and start kind of with a clean slate. We've got two new members that have been in the band now for a couple of years, and we just felt like it was time to finally start from scratch and give it kind of a new identity and give us a new home.
"The name CAFU, I first got the idea from my favorite Brazilian soccer player, and then I later decided it would make kind of for a cool band name — 'cause originally I was thinking about calling a song 'Cafu', maybe an album title of something — but then I started think that 'two parts caffeine, one part kung fu' kind of described the band and was really a good descriptive term for our live show and what we're all about."
CAFU, who are currently unsigned, have posted three full-length MP3s on their web site. Check them out:
01. Back To You (mp3)
02. Immune (mp3)
03. Here I Stand (mp3)
In related news, Rich is currently in pre-production with his new acoustic project, which is planning on entering the studio at the end of the month (Nov. 30 – Dec. 6). No further information is available at this time.
Ward's other band, FOZZY, in which is joined by former WWE champion Chris Jericho, will begin recording their third album at the end of the year for a spring release through Megaforce Records. The follow-up to last year's "Happenstance", which contained four original songs alongside a host of classic metal covers, will be recorded in Atlanta and Tampa.
